The STL Collection

I remember Bill Simmons writing a few weeks ago about his quest for the perfect throwback jersey. Bill's a huge Red Sox fan, so he chose a Pedro Martinez jersey...but from his days with the Dodgers. It got me thinking about what jerseys I would choose if money was not an object and I actually had places to wear 10 baseball jerseys. Here's my 10....

Tom Herr (#28) - Cardinals Current Home
This is the jersey that prompted this list. I saw someone wearing it at Game 1 of the NLCS and thought it had to be the perfect throwback Cardinals jersey. Popular player, yet obscure now. Everyone has a jersey with Pujols or McGwire on the back, but as far as I know, only one person has a Herr #28 jersey.

Larry Walker (#33) - 1989 Expos Blue Away
A lot of factors make this a great jersey. First of all, I just love Walker. Acts like a great guy and appreciative to be in St. Louis. Second, the Expos have called it a collective career and packed their bags for Washington, which I assume will not keep the Expos name. Third, two words....baby blue.

Joaquin Andujar (#47) - 1982 Cardinals Blue Away
The 80's version of Pedro Martinez with a little Al Hrabosky thrown in for good measure. Just dominant in the early 80s for the Cardinals but just unstable enough to be entertaining to boot. And again....gotta go with the baby blue.

Rex Hudler (#10) - Cardinals Current Home
Ask anyone in the world who Rex Hudler is, and you will probably get a shrug of the shoulders. Ask a Cardinals fan, you'll get a smile. The biggest hustler that I've ever seen. This guy would run full speed into the wall chasing a foul ball in a May game against the Padres. No concern for his body.

Mark McGwire (#25) - 1987 Athletics Gray Road
I know. Everyone has a McGwire jersey. But I don't. And since everyone in St. Louis has a Cardinals jersey, I'll take the A's jersey from his rookie year.

Willie McGee (#51) - 1991 San Francisco Gray Road
When I was growing up, Willie was my favorite player. I even had a baby blue Cards jersey that had "Kirk 51" on the back. I was heartbroken when he left to go to San Francisco, but was eventually rewarded with his return to St. Louis years later. While I hate the Giants, I'd take one just because it doesn't have "Bonds" on the back.

Edgar Renteria (#3) - 1994 Marlins Home
I can still remember watching Edgar knock home the winning run in the 1997 World Series before his Marlins team was dismantled around him. Good times. While Edgar never played in this particular uniform, I want this one because it comes before the Marlins sold out and took teal from the main color to an accent color. Give me the teal!

Ozzie Smith (#1) - 1979 San Diego Road
Did Ozzie really play for San Diego? Really? Then I'll have the jersey.

Darrell Porter (#15) - 1976 Milwaukee Home
Who can forget Darrell Porter celebrating his MVP of the 1982 World Series award by having a Diet Pepsi in the Cardinals' locker room after the game. Wearing those goggles. This Brewers jersey is just awful, but I think it captures the style of 1976 perfectly.

Jim Edmonds (#25) - 1994 California Angels Home
Before Jim Edmonds was chasing flyballs all over Busch Stadium, he was doing the same thing for the Angels...back when the team was claimed by the entire state of California instead of just Anahiem. Not a great looking uniform, but it IS his rookie year and it's much better than the god-awful ones they wore from 1997-2001.
